  1. Using stencils allows you to independently form the visual appearance of the room.
  2. Stencils for walls allow you to change the pattern as needed. It is enough to paint over the general surface and apply the paint again through the stencil. This is more convenient than removing and re-gluing wallpapers.
  3. The choice of colors and patterns is much wider than conventional wallpaper. The end result of using a stencil is limited only by the imagination of the performer.
  4. The cost of registration is significantly reduced if you make DIY stencils for decoration, templates for them can be found on free electronic resources or drawn independently.

Most often, stencils for walls are used, but this type of painting is also possible for other surfaces. Similarly, such murals indoors look on mirrors, fireplaces, window slopes. Sometimes you can find stenciled drawings on farm buildings of household plots, on fences, gates and other fences.

Ready-made stencils can be purchased at any major hardware store. However, factory samples have standard forms. The most original and unusual solutions will turn out if you combine different templates of stencils, choosing a unique picture.

Most popular stencils

Most often, flower stencils are used for interior decoration. This type of image is universal and equally suitable for any room. The final pattern can be monophonic or contrasting, can combine several juicy shades, becoming a bright accent in the living room, bedroom or nursery. Flower stencils fit perfectly into the interior of not only residential premises. Properly selected floral ornaments can decorate corridors, bathrooms and kitchens.

Images of flowers can be vertical or horizontal. In this way, they finish the space near the fireplaces, the walls on which the plasma panel is mounted, the area above the bedside tables. RImages can be large solitary or represent intricate floral patterns.

It is important to comply with the measure and give preference to one specific style of image. The use of several styles in the design of one room at once can lead to the fact that the stencil drawings lose their borders, the walls look dirty, the space of the room visually decreases.

Particular attention should be paid to the use of stencils in children's rooms. It’s better to use images familiar to your child. These can be drawings with your favorite cartoon characters or thematic compositions, for example, forest themes or images of elements of the underwater world. It all depends on the preferences of the child.

For older children, you can perform decor on a school theme. Letters and numbers are great options for screen painting. Making these stencils with your own hands is very simple. This process does not take much time. Children's themes for stencils are almost inexhaustible.

How to make a DIY stencil

The technique of making stencils at home

To realize one of the ideas for stencil, it is not necessary to be a first-class artist. Enough to have good taste and patience. After all, the manufacture of a stencil is a painstaking work that requires a lot of attention. To create a stencil you will need a minimal set of tools:

  • Printed template for stencil;
  • source material (thick paper or cardboard, thin plastic, polymer film);
  • stationery knife with interchangeable blades;
  • transparent tape;
  • felt-tip pen or pencil;
  • a carbon copy if the stencil is made of cardboard or paper;
  • vast flat surface.

If the stencil for decor is made on the basis of a ready-made template, then the drawing, as necessary, can be increased by scaling, then printed in parts and assembled into a single whole with adhesive tape or glue. You can transfer the image to paper from which you will make a stencil using carbon paper.

If the stencil is paper, then after applying the drawing, you need to laminate it or completely seal it with transparent tape on both sides. Then you should cut out with a clerical knife all the necessary details of the picture. Lamination of the template is necessary in order to avoid getting wet and damage to small parts of the stencil during painting.

The image is applied with a marker on a plastic base. The original drawing just needs to be outlined. It is better to attach the template with tape or paper clips to avoid uneven lines and inaccuracies in the ornament. When the basis for the stencil is created, you need to carefully cut all the details. Particular attention should be paid to small elements, since when cutting they often fall out of the general image. It is important to ensure that the cut lines are clear and even, this will make the future picture on the wall neat.

How to use a ready-made stencil

Decor stencils can only be used on perfectly flat surfaces. This must be taken care of in advance. The work of applying screen patterns is quite simple, but requires care and accuracy. To transfer the selected drawing to a wall or other surface, you will need very few auxiliary tools:

  • stencil;
  • aerosol glue;
  • painting tools (roller, brush, sponge);
  • paints of the necessary shades.
  • building level.

The finished stencil must be treated with special aerosol glue that will not leave marks on the wallpaper or painted wall. Then the blank of the future pattern is firmly pressed to the surface. This is a prerequisite for creating screen compositions, because during operation, the image may shift, and some details will be painted incorrectly.

You need to stick the stencil to the wall, after aligning it with the building level and making the necessary marking of the border of the future image. Then you can proceed to staining. Acrylic paints are best suited for working with stencils. They equally flat on any surface, almost odorless and dry quickly.

You can color small areas with a sponge or brush. It is important to ensure that excess paint does not flow under the stencil and does not spoil the drawing. The most suitable staining method is printed, when a brush or sponge is spotted on exposed parts of the stencil, rather than spreading across its entire surface. For large workpieces, a roller is suitable. In some cases, spray paint can be used. Then it is worth considering how to close the rest of the wall surface from accidental ingress of a coloring substance.
